Naoussa Byzantine Museum

Location and Setting:

• Situated within the Ekatontapiliani complex in Parikia, the Byzantine Museum of Paros stands as a guardian of ecclesiastical history. This cultural repository offers a journey through time, showcasing rare icons, ecclesiastical artifacts, and relics spanning the post-Byzantine era.

Origins and Initiatives:

• The museum’s inception traces back to the early 20th century, guided by the vision of Archimandrite Georgios Filippos Skaramangas (1867-1944), the priest of Ekatontapiliani. It began as a collection of items discovered over the centuries in Ekatontapiliani and other Parikia churches. Skaramangas initiated the preservation effort in the early 20th century.

Historical Evolution:

• Following Skaramangas’s death, the museum underwent periods of closure and revival. Bishop Epifanios played a pivotal role in transferring the collection to dedicated cells within the Ekatontapiliani complex. However, the full restoration and official reopening occurred in the latter part of the 20th century.

Restoration Efforts:

• Significant restoration work took place, both on-site and at external restoration workshops, ensuring the preservation of the valuable icons. The collaboration with the Central Restoration Workshop and the Restoration Center for Antiquities contributed to the meticulous restoration of numerous icons.

Exhibition Spaces:

• The Byzantine Museum of Paros, inaugurated in 1996 during the celebration of Ekatontapiliani’s 17th century, occupies designated spaces within the Ekatontapiliani cell complex. Three ground-floor rooms, a chapel, and two halls in the southwest corner serve as galleries, each uniquely tailored to display specific artifacts.

Artifacts on Display:

• The exhibits include a diverse array of items such as icons, wood carvings, ecclesiastical vestments, clasps, and the wooden epitaph of Ekatontapiliani. The carefully designed display cases house silver items, adding a touch of splendor to the historical narrative.

Ongoing Enrichment:

• The museum remains a dynamic institution, continually evolving through new donations and acquisitions. This ongoing enrichment ensures that the Byzantine Museum of Paros remains a vibrant reflection of Parikia’s ecclesiastical heritage.
