Byzantine Museum of Paros: Preserving Ecclesiastical Treasures
Historical Preservation:
- Nestled within the Ekatontapiliani complex in Parikia, the Byzantine Museum of Paros stands as a guardian of ecclesiastical treasures and rare icons, dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. This museum is a testament to the rich post-Byzantine history of Paros.
A Legacy Ignited:
- The museum’s legacy began in the early 20th century, sparked by the initiative of Archimandrite Georgios Filippos Skaramangas, the priest of Ekatontapiliani. His efforts led to the collection’s inception, incorporating items discovered over the centuries within the temple and other churches in Parikia.
Periods of Dormancy and Revival:
- The museum faced periods of dormancy following the passing of Father Georgios Skaramangas and the subsequent closure after Bishop Epifanios. However, under Bishop Ambrose’s guidance, a revival ensued. In 1996, during the celebration of Ekatontapiliani’s 17th century, the museum found new life, exhibiting a portion of its collection.
Treasures in Exhibition:
- The Byzantine Museum’s exhibits span three ground floor rooms, a chapel, and two halls within the Ekatontapiliani complex. The diverse collection features icons, wood carvings, vestments, clasps, and other ecclesiastical items. The carved epitaph of Ekatontapiliani and a selection of silver items are displayed in specially designed cases.
Continual Enrichment:
- Over the years, the collection has been continually enriched through donations and the addition of new icons. This living museum is a dynamic repository of Paros’s religious and artistic heritage.
